3. July 1, 1916
The Battle of the Somme begins – On July 1, 1916, during World War I, the Battle of the Somme begins between British and Commonwealth forces against German forces. This battle lasted 141 days and became one of the bloodiest battles in history.

4. July 1, 1942
The Battle of El Alamein begins – On July 1, 1942, during World War II, the Battle of El Alamein begins between Allied forces led by General Bernard Montgomery and Axis forces led by General Erwin Rommel in North Africa. This battle was a turning point in the North African campaign.
5. July 1, 1997
Handover of Hong Kong to China – On July 1, 1997, Britain handed over sovereignty of Hong Kong to China in a ceremony attended by international leaders. This surrender marked the end of British colonial rule which lasted for 156 years in Hong Kong.
