What is the Manhattan Project or the Manhattan Project?
The Manhattan Project was an unprecedented, top-secret World War II government program.
In the project, the United States rushed to develop and use the world’s first atomic weapons before Nazi Germany.
The use of these weapons by the United States against Japan in August 1945 would eventually become one of the most important historical events of the 20th century.

This project ushered in the nuclear age and left a lasting legacy that resonates all around us today.
The Manhattan Project took shape in three main locations across the country: Hanford, Washington; Los Alamos, New Mexico; and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Race to build atomic weapons
Scientists in Germany discovered nuclear fission in December 1938.
Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard realized that nuclear chain reactions could be used to create new and very powerful atomic weapons.
In August 1939, Szilard wrote a letter for Albert Einstein to sign and send to President Franklin D. Roosevelt warning that a “very powerful bomb” might be made.
Alarmed by the ongoing research and development by Nazi Germany, Roosevelt formed the Advisory Committee on Uranium, which met for the first time on October 21, 1939.
