BBC Media Player

Review

The BBC Media Player app was designed to enable video and audio playback for other BBC apps installed on users’ devices. It means that the users can implement the BBC Media Player app to watch videos from other BBC applications.

Design (3/5)

The app is minimalistic in its layout and follows BBC’s signature black and white color scheme. The media player is easy to navigate through. The app requires access to Wi-Fi or any Internet connection to work.

The main page itself contains all of the BBC Media Player’s functions. Users will see a list of BBC apps that are ready to be launched with the Media Player app if they already have other BBC apps installed on their devices.

The lower part of the screen offers “more from the BBC” from where users can browse through other BBC apps, or visit the BBC Homepage. The icon on the top right corner of the screen opens access to privacy and cookies, and the terms of use of the app.

Content & Features (3/5)

The BBC Media Player’s content is limited to playing media from other BBC applications. It allows users to play media without requiring a Flash connection. The app lists all of the other BBC applications already present on the user’s devices that are ready to launch through the media player. It essentially functions as a companion app to other BBC apps.

User Experiences (3/5)

The number of bad reviews for this app are almost 2/3rd the number of the good ones for it. Clearly, the BBC Media Player app has not been very successful in functioning efficiently. Several users do not see the purpose of having a separate app for video and audio playback, especially if it does not work well. Users are often informed by the app that their content is not working and to try again later.

The users who have managed to operate the app without any problems are quite satisfied with the results, but nonetheless find no reason to download an app that just plays content from other apps. However, multiple HTC users have reported that the app works quite well on their devices, and provides excellent quality content for them to consume.

Devices (3/5)

The BBC Media Player app is available for free installation on the Google Play Store for most Android devices.

Final Point

The overall impact that the BBC Media Player app has had on the users who have installed it and put it to the test is rather unsatisfactory. In spite of having a lot of good reviews, it is the sad reviews that appear to be making their way out to the front for others to view. Users have declared that the app is inefficient and redundant.
